The Upper Peninsula Winter Bucket List: 12 Adventures Beyond the Snowmobile Trail

By Jason Oberle · October 17, 2026

The WildYooper logo — the smiling white-bearded mascot in an orange cap above the words WILDYOOPER and the motto 'Your U.P. Adventure Starts Here'

"Your U.P. adventure starts here" is written right on the logo, and I mean it as an itinerary, not a slogan. The snowmobile gets you here. These twelve things are why you'll stay an extra day — I've done most of them, the rest are penciled in before my knees file a formal complaint.

The list

1. Walk behind the Eben Ice Caves. A frozen curtain near Trenary, a short snowshoe in, and you stand inside the ice looking out. Go early on a weekday and you'll have it to yourself. It's Munising country, so pair it with a ride.

2. Tahquamenon Falls wearing ice. Root-beer water pouring through a frame of ice sculptures, near Paradise — and in winter, maybe six people there instead of six hundred. Best trade in Michigan.

3. Watch the ice climbers at Pictured Rocks. Or clip in and try the starter wall yourself — the whole story's in my ice curtains post.

4. The UP200 start in downtown Marquette. February, barriers, coffee in hand, two hundred dogs losing their minds with joy. Details in the dog sledding post.

5. Stand at the bottom of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump. Iron Mountain's giant is one of the tallest jumps on the planet, the jumpers come from overseas, and the hill will make your knees weak from the bottom.

6. Ride out, drill a hole, catch dinner. The ride-and-fish guide covers the lakes. Fresh walleye through the ice tastes like a story you'll tell badly for years.

7. Cross the Portage Lake Lift Bridge on your sled. In winter the bridge between Hancock and Houghton lowers a deck just for snowmobiles. You ride through the middle of a lift bridge, over a ship channel. Only here.

8. Northern lights over Copper Harbor. Drive to the top of the Keweenaw on a clear, cold night when the solar wind is up. Some of the darkest sky in the Midwest, and when the lights start moving you'll forget your toes are cold. Almost.

9. The Soo Locks in winter. The great freighters bedded down in the ice at Sault Ste. Marie, the river steaming in the cold. My hometown, so I'm biased — but January at the locks is something every Yooper should see once.

10. The CopperDog night start in Calumet. Headlamps, huskies, and a whole town turned out in March to watch teams run into the dark toward Copper Harbor.

11. Snowshoe to a frozen waterfall. Munising's falls in their ice-sculpture season, on short packed trails anyone can manage. Bring the camera you don't mind dropping in snow.

12. A morning on the Superior shore trails. Clear, bitter, bright — from Grand Marais to the Porcupine Mountains, riding beside the biggest lake in the world by surface area, spray frozen on the rocks. It's the best thing on this list and it doesn't cost a dime.

Every item pairs with a riding day — the town links take you straight to the condition pages I update all season, so the bucket list and the ride plan live in one place. That's the whole idea.
