Grooming reports, explained
A groomed trail at 8 a.m. can be whooped out by noon on a busy Saturday. The only grooming claim worth anything is a dated one — which club, which trails, which night.
Who grooms the U.P.
Michigan's snowmobile trails are groomed by local clubs and operators working under grant agreements, funded in part by your trail permit dollars. Volunteers run the groomers, usually at night, so trails set up firm by morning.
Our rule
- Grooming is only reported from a dated report by the club or operator doing the work.
- Closures are only reported from the official authority — DNR, MDOT, the Bridge Authority, a land manager.
- If we cannot verify a trail's state, we print "not yet reported" — never a guess dressed up as news.
Read a report like a groomer
"Groomed" tells you the machine passed. It does not promise the trail stayed smooth, that corners aren't icy, or that a swamp section froze. Our reports add the dates, the thin spots the clubs flag, and the weather that will change it — so you can judge for yourself.
