Mackinac Bridge status
The Mighty Mac is the only road between most riders and the U.P. trails. When wind or falling ice closes it, trips stop in St. Ignace or Mackinaw City — so bridge status leads our report every single morning in season.
Current status — the Mackinac Bridge
Season not started — no reports yet
The 2026-27 season has not started yet. Trail reports begin with the first groomable snow, expected in December. Until then, every page shows the honest status: not yet reported.
In season, this page is updated every morning from the official sources and club grooming reports for the the Mackinac Bridge area.
What closes the bridge
- High wind — escorts and speed limits first, then full closures for high-profile vehicles, then everyone.
- Falling ice — ice dropping from the cables and towers can close the bridge with little warning, sometimes for hours.
- Whiteouts and crashes — lake-effect squalls on the straits are sudden and total.
What to do if it's closed
St. Ignace, on the U.P. side, is built for riders: staging, fuel, food, and lodging — and trails you can ride without crossing anything. Our St. Ignace conditions page covers the US-2 corridor west and the trails north. Paid instant alerts text you the moment a closure is verified — and again when the bridge reopens — because a 6 a.m. text is the difference between a riding day and a windshield day.
The official source is the Mackinac Bridge Authority. We report their status, dated and timed — never a rumor from social media.
